OK, I think it's kind of cool that Allen Iverson announced on Twitter that he's signing with Memphis -- rather than the Bobcats. You do get the info directly from the source. But do wonder about his tweet beginning "God chose Memphis as the place that I will continue my career." That's where a journalist's questions might add a little clarity.
Love the site http://myparentsjoinedfacebook.com and the stories in the WSJ and Wash Post about hovering parents. I'm doing a story for Friday on Facebook etiquette -- although it's really more accurate to call them personal fouls, or red Faces. I got two egregious pieces of spam from FB friends in the past 24 hours. I mean, I'm tempted to out them in the paper. (But I won't.) Stories of your own? Let me know.
Gave my second interview to a journalist today about the Twitter directory, to a Minneapolis Star Tribune reporter. And got an email request for an interview from the Richmond paper. Interesting how much outside buzz it's getting. The goal is to create a visible, clear local directory for what can be a very confusing, global medium. If you aren't on it yet, good time to get in, here.
Invited to speak in NYC. Have a half-dozen talks coming up. And, ironically, I'm working on a big story on whether all the buzz around social media is warranted, and how to assess all this vs. e-mail and other major media innovations. There certainly is a lot of buzz. Let me know your thoughts.

I told you guys this story never had legs to begin with for him to be a Bobcat, it was never even CONSIDERED, please write about legitimate stories.... The Bobcats are giving players away and making trades ,bailing on high contract guys and not signing basically their best player in Felton.. You guys continually make stories about high profile guys such as Farve and Vick and now Iverson coming here, and you are already writing your Lebron to Charlotte story for next summer Because of his love for MJ... Please quit it already.
ReplyDeleteNow let's sign Felton all ready!
ReplyDeleteI think the uncertainty with ownership probably prevented the Bobcats of having a legitimate chance of signing Iverson...I think that's partly the reason why they've yet to sign Felton.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the buzz around social media:
ReplyDeleteCool and different get the buzz when it comes to technology. It really doesn't seem matter if it adds value.
In business, I think social media is merely an extension of customer service or customer communication. I see it as a channel to keep the customer informed and engaged. It somehow seems more urgent than phone calls and email, but it's probably not. It's likely just the feel of instant gratification that makes it seem more urgent.
There are also many benefits to support and strengthen engagement (video, for example) that aren't as easily deployed through more traditional channels. Sharing stories, pictures and videos is also easier between folks of like minds.
But, in the end, it's just another channel of communication. And a rapidly evolving one, at that.
On the personal side, it does make connecting with family and long-lost friends a bit easier. There's a bit of a voyeuristic quality to it that makes people feel more connected than they may really be. Social media makes those connections so much easier than phone, fax or email. From a personal perspective, the sense of urgency is not as great. It seems to be a genuine desire to be connected with those who know us, and who knew us, "when."
Once again..Charlotte plays it "safe"..When will we learn..Iverson could have brought out the fans(more fans) to the games. We need an "attn grabber"..First Vick..now Iverson.Charlotte needs to get up from off the side line sometimes and take a leap of faith.." if you dont shoot, you wont score"...BOTTOM LINE.
